It’s common to assume that the rodent family extends to just mice and rats, but you’d be surprised with the various kinds of rodents there are in the world. Did you know that rodents can be found on every continent in the world except for Antarctica? Known for taking advantage of all food and water sources, rodents easily become a nuisance.

Let’s break down some of the attributes of a rodent together so that you can identify them with more ease the next time they invade your space.

Back to Basics

Rodents, regardless of their specific classification, all share a common feature: a pair of incisors at the front of their mouth that never cease to grow. To slow the growth of these teeth or file them down over time, rodents constantly chew and gnaw, which is why they tend to be rather destructive.

Because mice and rats are the two most common rodent species, it’s important to clearly identify the differences. Both are completely covered in fur with long tails, beady eyes, and rounded ears—yet rats are three to five times the size of mice.

Danger Has Struck

Now lies the million-dollar question: are rodents dangerous? This question can be answered in various different ways, but the short answer is yes.

Here are five reasons why rodents can be so dangerous:

#1: They contaminate food due to their urine and feces droppings.

#2: They spread various bacteria and diseases including—but not limited to—tularemia, leptospirosis, and salmonellosis.

#3: They invite fleas, ticks, mites, and other pests into your home.

#4: They easily chew through walls, floors, furniture, and more inside your home.

#5: They risk fire or water damage due to their incessant chewing through wires and pipes.

Getting Rid of The Problem

If you have a rodent problem in your home or around your property, it’s important to take the necessary steps to get rid of them entirely. Most rodents come out to “play” any time in the late fall and winter.

They can be found virtually anywhere, but are most commonly found outside in trees, woodpiles, rock piles, underneath decks or porches, etc. Rodents can also make their way inside your home, which is often the most frustrating place. For example, they can be found behind walls, lurking in crawl spaces or attics, and under kitchen appliances.

First, the easiest way to get rid of a rodent infestation completely is with the help of a professional. While we do suggest our services, we recognize that there are also many home remedies you can choose to pursue to reduce your chances of infestation.

Here are three:

#1: Seal any opening in or around your home—no matter how big or small.

#2: Tightly bind trash and other food containers

#3: Trim tree limbs in the direction opposite of your home
